Senior Capstone

intro

I came up with the idea to make an app that can help people with ADHD organize their life while keeping them on track. I have ADHD, and it is personal to develop a concept to help others who struggle with this disability. So I aim to create a new way to cope with ADHD with a design app to improve people's performance and learning ability.

 My Mood Board

  • There is a nationwide Adderall shortage. Nearly 64% of 360 independent pharmacies had issues acquiring Adderall, according to one survey conducted by the National Community Pharmacists Association.

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent childhood disorders today. It is generally more likely to be diagnosed and treated in boys than in girls.

  • Studies indicate a specific, genetically influenced relation between top-down eye movement control and the inattentive traits typical of ADHD.

  • College students and adults are increasingly being diagnosed with ADHD, which has been a trend for many years.

My Research
Solving the Problem?
  • We can change how we treat ADHD by creating an app or system to help teenagers or college students organize their lives without taking medication.

  •  There are different ways to treat without prescriptions. We can organize someone's life digitally.

  • We can control movements or attention spans by programming or coding different interfaces or systems that can alert individuals to stay on track and independent with progress and their lives.

  •  My idea is also to have a universal app that can work with many school districts and colleges around the country that many Educators can use to help kids with ADHD.

There was a rise in ADHD among kids from impoverished families compared to only 10% among middle- and upper-class children between 2003 and 2007.

60%

Data-Visualization

8.7 %

Of the U.S. Population has been diagnosed with ADHD.

A survey that I had parents reported on different medications and types of behavior treatments for children 2–17 years of age with current ADHD.

64%

The U.S. population is taking ADHD medication and one out of 20 children in the U.S. are taking ADHD medication.

There are 6 million children who have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, according to different data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and only 60 percent were being treated with medication.

5% of people that I interviewed think they have ADHD

30 % of people I interviewed don’t trust taking Adderall or any other Stimulant to help control their ADHD

10% of people that I interviewed take medication to help manage their ADHD

Annual prevalence of use of Adderall for grades 8, 10, and 12, combined from 2009 to 2021

The final stage

For the second half of this year, I used my research, data, interviews, and other parameters to finally organize and find a way to design an app or system to help people with ADHD stay focused in school and track their progress. I wanted to find a way that they did not have to take medication for their ADHD but to design a system that could organize their life and improve their overall focus. In the beginning stages of Designing this app, I made sketches, then applied information architecture to show what the app would look like and planned the color scheme. I used my user flow for reference on what the overall structure of the app would look like. I also had to create a system that could alert individuals if they weren't paying attention. This was a significant design problem that I had to figure out. I found a simple way to program an alert with alarms or program responses with vibrations. Programming the app to do three other things like scheduling appointments, call alarms, and text message reminders but also having the ability to book reminders in advance with a calendar system. I quickly figured out how to design and prototype an app that could easily represent my idea. I still want to develop this app and make it even better. I want to get this app out to the real world to many education systems around the country.
